From Bus Numbers to New Possibilities
For Kenneth, recognising a bus number or MRT station code may seem like a small achievement. But each one is a step towards greater confidence and independence in navigating the community.
Kenneth loves being outdoors, taking public transport and observing the world around him from traffic lights and familiar landmarks to buses and MRT stations. As he travels, he will express himself by commenting on where he is, which station he is approaching, and which bus number he needs to look out for.
He also has a particular fascination with numbers.
At Eden Centre for Adults (Hougang), his coaches have learnt to turn these interests into opportunities for learning.

A small step towards independence
When Kenneth first started going out as part of the Eden Centre for Adults (ECFA) 2.0 community programme that enables beneficiaries to take part in community activities, he was still learning to navigate public transport.
At a bus stop, he might flag any bus that arrived without checking its number. On the MRT, he was unfamiliar with identifying which station he needed to alight at.
Today, he has learnt how to look for the specific bus number he needs. He can also recognise his MRT destination through its station code. For example, looking for "DT28" rather than the station name "Kaki Bukit".
Remembering a number may seem like a small achievement, but it means a great deal for individuals like him as he is becoming more confident in understanding his surroundings and navigating around the community.
His coach, Sarah, supports this progress by building on Kenneth’s abilities, tapping on his strong interest in public transport and the outdoors as key motivators to encourage meaningful engagement, communication and community navigation skills.
At ECFA, person-centred support means understanding each individual and finding meaningful ways for them to build on their strengths and abilities.

Small moments, meaningful progress
Kenneth's growth can be seen in everyday moments too.
He has always been fascinated by traffic lights. In the past, he might run towards one when he was outdoors or leave an activity at the centre to look at the traffic lights outside the window. Today, he is able to focus on his task and complete it.
He is also learning to adapt when things do not go as expected. For example, if his preferred seat on the train is occupied, a simple explanation such as "no space" helps him understand why he needs to choose another seat.
Each of these moments may seem small, but together, they can make a huge difference to how Kenneth participates in everyday life.
Behind every step
At ECFA, Kenneth's coaches provide the structure and opportunities for him to practice skills in meaningful settings. Schedules and work systems help understand what is expected, while visual supports, modelling and a structured environment help him approach new activities.
His family continues this support at home as they reinforce the strategies he learns at ECFA with visual cues.
